Comments

Fitchburg State, Westfield State and Endicott were using new helmet designs in 2007 (shown above), and Framingham State returned to a design last used by the team in 2001.

Historical Helmets

BRIDGEWATER STATE

? - 1998? 1999? - 2003 2004 -

COAST GUARD

? - present

I have received partial information, but no photographs yet, of some earlier Coast Guard helmets. The predecessor of the one shown above has been described as having a "bear paw" logo. The team is reported to have used plain orange helmets, both with and without stripes, during some years.

I have received confirmation that the very unusual helmet design shown in the photograph below (the light-colored helmets) was used by Coast Guard in about the year 1978; the stripes were intended to resemble those painted on the Coast Guard's ships. I would greatly appreciate better photographs of this design, particularly colors photographs - the main stripe on the helmet may have been red rather than orange, which is presently one of the team's colors.

CURRY

? - 2002? 2003? -
*see note 1 below

The recent sequence of helmet designs for this team is somewhat unclear. It has been reported to me that the team used gray helmets in 1998 with the team name "Colonels" in a script font, colored purple, on the sides. A switch to black helmets was made in 1999; these featured the word "Curry" on the sides in some unspecified color.

It is unclear how long the black helmets were in use, but I believe the team was using silver or gray helmets immediately prior to the switch to purple helmets, which is said to have occurred in 2002. The only photographs that I have seen from 2002 appear to show no logos worn on the helmets.

The helmets used from at least 1989 through 1993 have been described as plain silver without any logo (facemask color was not specified); another report indicated that a "purple overlapping 'CC'" logo was worn on silver helmets earlier during the 1980s.

*1 During at least the 2004 season, the "CC" logo was worn on only the right sides of the helmets, with the left sides left "blank". This appears to have also been the case during the only game of the 2003 season from which I have received any photographs (vs Stonehill).

ENDICOTT

FITCHBURG STATE

MAINE MARITIME

c.early 2000s 2003 2005 -

The dates of use for these helmets are quite uncertain; I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can clarify the years of use for each design. The last two were used during at least parts of the 2003 and 2005 seasons, respectively.

MASSACHUSETTS-DARTMOUTH

? - 2001? 2002? - 2005 2006 - 2007
2007 -

In 2006, this team had a new helmet design featuring the letters "UM" in white with gold outlines, as may be seen in the photograph below. I would appreciate a copy of the helmet logo for this one, which would enable me to add this historical helmet to the web site. This "UM" design was also used during at least a portion of the 2007 season. It was used September 22 against Plymouth State, but a switch to the next design was made by at least the November 3 game against Curry.

MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME

? - 2004 2005 -

M.I.T.

? - 2005 2006 -

NICHOLS

? - 2004? 2005 only? 2006 -

PLYMOUTH STATE

2000? - ? 2003? - 2004 2005 -

It is unclear to me when the switch was made from the helmet with the green oval-shaped logo to the plain white helmet that was in use during at least the 2003 season. The green oval was in use during at least the 2000 and 2001 seasons, but I do not know which design (if either) was in use in 2002.

The next older design (?-1999) featured a dark-colored "paw print" with a white outline, and was worn on dark-colored helmet shells (presumably either green or black).

SALVE REGINA

? - 2003; 2005 -

I received a report that this team was using a new logo on its helmets in 2004; the new logo was described as being identical to the old Seattle Seahawks logo. At least one very low-quality photograph showing a helmet with such a logo was visible on the team's web site during 2005 and 2006, but I think it is possible that the photo may be from some earlier year (perhaps 2002 or earlier). Photographs from the 2005 season show the team using the round "bird" logo which was also used in 2003. Clarification of the dates of use for these helmets would be appreciated, as would photos of the other helmet.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND

2005 -

From 2002 through 2004, Western New England used royal blue helmet shells with white facemasks and with a decal consisting of a large yellow "W" with a bear's face in front of the "W", as shown in the photograph here. I would appreciate a copy of the helmet logo, as well as a copy of the previously-used one, which was the letters "WNEC" in yellow (which was also worn on blue helmets with white facemasks).

WESTFIELD STATE

? - 2003 2004 - 2006 2007 -

WORCESTER STATE

? - 1998; 2004 - 2005 2002 - 2003?; 2006 -

From 1999 through 2001, Worcester State used a helmet decal similar to that presently used by Florida State, except that the "spear" was royal blue and white, and did not have "feathers" hanging down from it.
